Mercedes SLK 55 AMG Black Series

Mercedes have created a more hardcore version of their SLK 55 AMG model.
The new car is powered by basically the same engine as the ‘regular’ SLK 55 – a 5.5L V8 unit. Thanks to a modified air intake, new air filters, high perfmorance manifolds and a new valve-timing scheme, power is up 40 bhp to 400 bhp. This means a 0-62 mph time of 4.5 seconds and onto an electronically limited top speed of just over 170 mph.
On the chassis side of things, there’s the addition of AMG adjustable sports suspension and a set of 19 inch ultra-light, forged AMG aluminium wheels hiding AMG high-performance composite brakes,
The SLK 55 AMG Black Series has shed 45 kg thanks to (wider than standard) carbon composite front wings and the disposal of the tin top roof and all its mechanism in favour of a one piece replacement, again made from carbon composite materials. This also helped Mercedes to lower the cars centre of gravity.
Inside, the car has a real ‘track’ feel to it, thanks to a pair of AMG bucket seats, a sports steering wheel and yet more carbon used for the interior door panels. Any lighter and it’ll need tying down.
Mercedes look to have created nice a car in the same vein as the Porsche 997 GT3 RS, with almost equal performance.
Shame they limited that top speed.
