The 44-year-old seven-time Formula One World Champion struck his head on a rock while skiing off-piste in the resort of Meribel with his 14-year-old son and some friends. He was airlifted off the mountain within minutes of the accident and found to be suffering serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival at the hospital in Grenoble.
An immediate neurosurgical operation was carried out, with a spokesman just announcing: “The neurosurgical treatment he received brought us quite a lot of information. We had to operate urgently to release some pressure in his head. Unfortunately, he has some legions within his brain.”
Professor Yohan Payan added: “We can say he is fighting for his life. We judge him to be in a very serious situation. We cannot tell what the outcome will be yet. We are working hour-by-hour but it’s too early to say what is going to happen and to have a prognosis.”
“We think his helmet did help, without a helmet he wouldn’t be here now.”
Our thoughts are with Schumi and his family at this time.
