Porsche 961 name set for a comeback

Porsche CEO Matthias Muller has confirmed that the company is working on a new mid-engined sports car with a CFRP monocoque chassis to rival the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren 12C.

Designed to sit between the 911 GT2 and Porsche’s forthcoming 918 Spyder, the new model is rumoured to wear the 961 name – last seen on the Group B sports prototype 959-based racecar and borrow the 918’s 4.6-litre V8 engine. Developing 425 kW (570 hp), a 0-100 km/h time in the three second bracket would be entirely realistic.

Pricing is expected to be around the £250,000 mark when it eventually sees production.
