Audi’s digital rear-view mirror transfers to the road

You may remember Audi releasing details of the digital rear-view mirror in its innovative and victorious R18 racecar, and the eagle-eyed amongst you will also have spotted it in the record-breaking R8 e-tron. Well, once again, motorsport technology has filtered down to production road cars.

Due to début in the R8 e-tron at the end of this year; an ultra-lightweight camera, located within an aerodynamically optimized housing at the rear of the car, sends a totally fluid image flow in real-time transmission to a 7.7-inch AMOLED (active matrix OLED) display which was developed jointly with partner Samsung.

The system’s intelligent control system prevents dazzle from the headlights of other vehicles during the hours of darkness, with the driver also able to dim or deactivate the display at any time. Audi tells us that future versions will also incorporate additional information.
