Favoured vehicle of the surfing community — The Volkswagen Microbus, now showcases the latest in high-tech equipment thanks to the automaker’s Electronics Research Laboratory.
The concept vehicle, dubbed the Chameleon, uses roof-mounted surfboards fitted with solar panels that provide a source of energy.
The vehicle made its debut last Friday in Boston at the AltWheels event and has been described as a “public relations tool to showcase the potential future of automotive electronics set inthe nostalgic package of this favourite old-timer.”
The engine has been replaced with an all-electric drive engine powered with lithium polymer batteries in collaboration with Hybrid Technologies. The exterior features keyless entry, LED lighting and wide-angle parking cameras. Inside, there’s an interactive digital instrument cluster, embedded touch pads and speech-activated controls.
