Porsche-engined VW split-screen bus hits Monza

We’ve been fans of Fred Bernhard’s heavily modified Volkswagen split-screen bus for almost a decade, so it’s great to see that it’s still going strong – and giving those pesky Ferraris a hard time at Monza circuit.
Four years in the making, Fred restored – and widened – a rusting T1 bodyshell before attaching it to the later T3 floorpan, while the fitment of a carbon fibre roof panel helps to lower the centre of gravity. Propulsion comes courtesy of a tweaked twin-turbocharged Porsche 993 engine developing 530 hp and 757 Nm of torque mated to a 996 GT3 six-speed manual gearbox with GT Cup shifter. The 993 also donated its brakes while the original suspension makes way for meatier custom Bilstein coil-overs and Eibach springs.
Enjoy!
