  • Fastest TSI-engined Volkswagen Jetta in action

    Project Madonna
Here is – what is claimed to be – the world’s fastest Volkswagen Jetta running a TSI engine.

Owned by Patrick Soares, and put together with the assistance of USP Motorsports, Precision Turbo & Engine and APR, the 2012 Jetta GLI 2.0 TSI has been reworked to produce 554 whp, enough to propel the car to a 10.99 run @ 129 mph.

That’s an insane amount of power, especially for a front-wheel drive car. If you were thinking of going down a similar route, here’s Patrick’s tip for driving in a straight line: “Start in at least 3rd, full throttle, turn steering wheel to the left, hold on and hope for the best.”

  • Porsche Cayenne Turbo S vs Caterham 7 Supersport

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S vs Caterham 7 Supersport
This new video from evo sees the magazine’s Dickie Meaden heading to Bedford Autodrome for a track battle between Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo S and the Caterham 7 Supersport: two vehicles that have probably never been mentioned in the same sentence before.

The 2,215 kg Cayenne Turbo enjoys 405 kW (550 hp) and 750 Nm thanks to its 4.8-litre, eight-cylinder powerplant, while the Supersport makes do with a modest 104 kW (140 hp) 1.6-litre Ford Sigma engine – but barely tips the scales at 520 kg.

So, which is your money on?

  • Volkswagen Design Vision GTI trailer

    Volkswagen Design Vision GTI
Following on from yesterday’s photographs, Volkswagen has released this moody trailer for its Design Vision GTI, which takes a large dollop of inspiration from Transformers.

Propelled by a twin-turbocharged 3.0 V6-TSI unit, developing 375 kW (503 hp) and a maximum torque figure of 560 Nm, the all-wheel drive Design Vision GTI rockets to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and enjoys a 300 km/h (186 mph) top speed.

We’d love to see this vehicle make it to production, even in very limited numbers. Unlike the insane, mid-engined GTI W12-650, which debuted at the 2007 Worthersee, the front-engined Design Vision GTI sits on the same MQB base as its road-going counterpart, meaning it would be much more straightforward to produce. Or, even better – they could build one that transforms…

  • Audi A1 competition kit R18 plus

Audi A1 competition kit R18 plus
Audi has chosen Worthersee to debut its competition kit R18 plus to suit the company’s dinky A1 hatchback.

Available in red plus and grey plus themes, this new option is based on the regular competition kit, which comprises of a front spoiler lip, side skirts, a twin-level roof spoiler, matte black rear diffuser and sports tailpipe trims made from chrome-plated stainless steel.

As the name suggests, this special version takes its name from the first ever Le Mans-winning hybrid drive car, the innovative R18 e-tron quattro. The 378 logo is a nod to the number of laps completed, while the inspired matte body graphics are replicated on the centre console.

A pair of instructive floor mats and a set of anthracite polygon design alloy wheels, measuring 7.5 x 18-inches, complete the look.

  • Volkswagen Design Vision GTI surfaces

    Volkswagen Design Vision GTI
Following on from the recent renderings, Volkswagen has unveiled its low-slung Design Vision GTI – a racing version of the iconic hatchback – to the crowd at Worthersee in Austria.

Based on the current Golf GTI model, the Design Vision GTI is wider at 1,870 mm instead of 1,799 mm, 15 mm shorter at 4,253 mm and stands 57 mm lower at 1,385 mm. Meanwhile, the front track of 1,595 mm and 1,579 mm has been stretched from 1,538 mm and 1,516 mm respectively.

Rather than retain the 2.0-litre engine of the production GTI, Volkswagen has opted for a twin-turbocharged 3.0 V6-TSI unit, which develops 375 kW (503 hp) and a maximum torque figure of 560 Nm. On the road, that power is transferred to the all-wheel drive system via a DSG dual clutch transmission, allowing a 3.9 second sprint to 100 km/h and a 300 km/h (186 mph) top speed.

Notable hardware on this ‘Super-GTI’ includes ceramic brakes using 380 mm and 356 mm discs gripped by red calipers, which can be glimpsed through the spokes of 8.5 and 9.5 x 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/35 and 275/30 tyres.

Visually, the widened body features an aggressive front fascia with lower spoiler, bottom air inlet and side openings – combined with the headlights – which feed cold air to the brakes. The front fenders house vertical air outlets which flow into the side sills before merging with the expanded C pillar. At the rear there’s an integrated roof spoiler and colossal diffuser section which fights for attention with those imposing tailpipes.

Moving inside, the minimalist cabin uses a combination of carbon fibre, leather and Alcantara. Regular seat belts make way for red racing harnesses, while a cross-member now resides where the rear seats would usually live. There are buttons for a fire extinguisher and ESP deactivation, while a display to the right of the main instruments not only relays circuit information and lap times, but allows drivers to communicate with each other in conjunction with the on-board cameras.

  • Volkswagen presents Golf GTI Cabriolet Austria

    Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet Austria
Volkswagen has revealed its customized 245 kW (329 hp) Golf GTI Cabriolet Austria to fans attending the GTI Festival at the Worthersee Lake.

Based on the regular Golf GTI Cabriolet model, the Cabriolet Austria has been created by apprentice automotive mechanics, interior fitters, model makers and paint technicians from Wolfsburg and Osnabruck. Finished in Oryx White mother-of-pearl effect paintwork with contrasting Flash Red striping on each side of the bonnet and down the car’s flanks along with colour-coded front strakes, mirror casings, boot lid spoiler and brake calipers. A set of black multi-piece five spoke alloy wheels completes the exterior.

Moving inside, there’s a pair of ‘Austria’ embossed Recaro sports seats in black and red with white shells, while the door and dashboard trims, air vent trims, seat belts and floor mat bordering are also red. Completing the transformation is an eleven speaker sound system with 2,250 watts output, which resides where the rear seats are normally found.

“I’ve learned a lot about project work, and how important team work is,” said Kevin Hoffmann, a junior automotive mechatronics technician.
