  • Volkswagen’s Jetta Hybrid becomes world’s fastest hybrid

Volkswagen’s Jetta Hybrid has impressed onlookers during this year’s Speed Week event at Bonneville Salt Flats, near Wendover, achieving a top speed of 185 mph (298 km/h); a new record for production-based hybrids at the iconic location.

Piloted by by Motor Trend’s Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago, the Jetta’s powertrain has been tweaked by Volkswagen R&D in Wolfsburg in accordance with SCTA rules, with further modifications carried out by California’s A-Salt Racing and Advanced Product Engineering in order to run the car safely on the salt.

Powering the Jetta is a 1.4-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine, developing 110 kW (148 hp) and 250 Nm (184 lb/ft), along with a 20 kW (27 hp) electric motor.

“The Jetta Hybrid Land Speed Record project shows both the sporty nature of our Hybrid offering and the technical excellence of our engineers in Wolfsburg and in the Test Center California,” said Volkswagen’s Marc Trahan.

  • ABT Sportsline AS8

Kempten-based tuning specialist ABT Sportsline has created the AS8 tuning program for Audi’s heavyweight saloon, the S8.

Already producing an impressive 382 kW (520 hp) and 650 Nm (479 lb/ft) of torque in factory form, ABT’s Power Kit allows the 4.0 TFSI twin-turbocharged V8 engine to develop 456 kW (620 hp) and 780 Nm (575 lb/ft), which means that 100 km/h (62 mph) appears in 4 seconds, while 200 km/h happens a mere 9s later and top speed is limited to a more pleasurable 290 km/h (180 mph).

Other upgrades include ABT’s Level Control module, which allows adjustment of the car’s ride height, and a choice of wheel options including the CR and DR (pictured), in 20 and 21-inch diameters.

  • Oakley Design Lamborghini Aventador LP760 Spyder

Here’s a cool project, scooped by Shmee150, which is being jointly developed by the guys at Oakley Design and Refined-Marques: a Lamborghini Aventador LP760 Spyder.

Of course, Lamborghini has already produced the Jota Roadster, but that was a one-off model. A production version is due to hit showrooms sometime next year, but it appears that this particular owner couldn’t wait to feel the wind hitting his wallet.

Not quite as extreme as the Aventador J, Oakley Design’s car appears to retain its door pillars and roof bars, leading us to believe it may feature a removable roof panel. A fabric ‘umbrella’ section, similar to the Veyron Grand Sport’s, could be utilized if the driver got caught in a shower.

Thanks to the remapped ECU software and a titanium exhaust system the 6.5-litre twelve-cylinder now produces 760 hp and, if it’s anything like Oakley’s regular Aventador program, the Spyder will also be rear-wheel drive only.
