DTM: Ekstrom wins at Oschersleben
Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom secured his second win in three races during wet conditions at Oschersleben this afternoon to lead home yet another one-two-three for Audi. It is also Audi’s 60th DTM victory.Starting from fourth of the grid, Ekstrom worked his way through the field, snatching the lead from Mercedes-Benz driver, Bruno Spengler, on the eighth lap, before going on to win by over 42 seconds.
Spengler had been looking good for second place, but the combination of kerb damage and a time-consuming pitstop, involving an awkward front wheel saw him drop to the back, eventually retiring, and leaving Martin Tomczyk to take his place and extend his championship lead to 9 points. The Bavarian driver could now secure the title for Audi at Valencia next month.
Edoardo Mortara grabbed the third step of the podium, while Ralf Schumacher had been in line to finish fourth, but a spin followed by a collision with Albuquerque’s Audi, put him out, meaning Britain’s Gary Paffett gave Mercedes-Benz its best result on the day.
