  • Volkswagen Amarok R-Style Concept

    Volkswagen Amarok R-Style Concept
A handful of images have surfaced showing Volkswagen’s meaty Amarok R-Style Concept which will be putting in an appearance at Worthersee.

Looking more muscular thanks to an aggressive front fascia with large air intakes, 60 mm-wider bodywork comprising of widened fenders and side skirts, a larger rear bumper with carbon fibre diffuser and imposing tailpipes, the Concept rides on 22-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 295/35 tyres.

Moving inside, this sport-themed SUV gains a black, red and silver GTI-style cabin including a sports steering wheel, leather-trimmed bucket seats and carbon fibre coating on the dashboard and central tunnel.

Underneath the hood there’s a 3-litre V6 turbo diesel powerplant, which is good for 203 kW (272 hp) and 600 Nm of torque. Mated to an eight-speed automatic the all-wheel drive Amarok cracks 100 km/in under eight seconds.

  • Audi R8 V10 plus vs Nissan GT-R vs Porsche 911 Turbo S

    Audi R8 V10 plus vs Nissan GT-R vs Porsche 911 Turbo S
Today’s episode of DRIVE sees Chris Harris head to Anglesey Circuit and Bruntingthorpe to compare a trio of all-wheel drive sledgehammers: Audi’s R8 V10 plus, the Porsche 911 Turbo S and Nissan’s GT-R.

Rather than the brand spanking new 991 Turbo S, a 390 kW (523 hp) 997 version is on test along with a Nissan GT-R which has been massaged by Litchfield to produce a very healthy 559 kW (750 hp).

Goodies on the plus include CFRP mirrors, side blades, splitter, larger diffuser and adjustable bucket seats. Carbon ceramic brakes come as standard, while the increased output of 404 kW (550 hp) and 540 Nm of torque allows a 3.5 second sprint to 100 km/h and a 317 km/h (197 mph) top speed.

  • Andre Lotterer in the Audi TT ultra quattro concept

    Audi TT ultra quattro Concept
Just ahead of its Worthersee unveiling, Audi has released a video of the extreme TT ultra quattro concept being driven by its Le Mans-winning driver Andre Lotterer.

Thanks largely to the use of such materials as carbon fibre reinforced polymer for sections of the bodyshell, magnesium components in the floor and hinges, fiberglass-reinforced plastic for the suspension, a titanium exhaust system and wheels constructed from a mixture of CFRP and aluminium, the concept car enjoys a 300 kg weight loss over the TTS on which it is based.

Rather than producing 200 kW (272 hp) and 350 Nm of torque, the TTS’s 2.0 TFSI engine has been tweaked to pump out 228 kW (310 hp) and 400 Nm, meaning 100 km/h appears in 4.2 seconds, 1.3s faster than the series vehicle, and top speed is 280 km/h (174 mph).

  • Volkswagen Design Vision GTI heading to Worthersee

    Volkswagen Design Vision GTI
Tradition dictates that Volkswagen always takes something special to the GTI meeting at Worthersee, and this year is no exception with the Wolfsburg giant set to unveil its Design Vision GTI – a racing version of the iconic hatchback.

Based on the current Golf GTI model, the Design Vision GTI is wider at 1,870 mm instead of 1,799 mm, 15 mm shorter at 4,253 mm and stands 57 mm lower at 1,385 mm. Meanwhile, the front track of 1,595 mm and 1,579 mm has been stretched from 1,538 mm and 1,516 mm respectively.

Rather than retain the 2.0-litre engine of the production GTI, Volkswagen has opted for a twin-turbocharged 3.0 V6-TSI unit, which develops 375 kW (503 hp) and a maximum torque figure of 560 Nm. On the road, that power is transferred to the all-wheel drive system via a DSG dual clutch transmission, allowing a 3.9 second sprint to 100 km/h and a 300 km/h (186 mph) top speed.

Notable hardware on this ‘Super-GTI’ includes ceramic brakes using 380 mm and 356 mm discs gripped by red calipers, which can be glimpsed through the spokes of 8.5 and 9.5 x 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/35 and 275/30 tyres.

Visually, the widened body features an aggressive front fascia with lower spoiler, bottom air inlet and side openings – combined with the headlights – which feed cold air to the brakes. The front fenders house vertical air outlets which flow into the side sills before merging with the expanded C pillar. At the rear there’s an integrated roof spoiler and colossal diffuser section which fights for attention with those imposing tailpipes.

Moving inside, the minimalist cabin uses a combination of carbon fibre, leather and Alcantara. Regular seat belts make way for red racing harnesses, while a cross-member now resides where the rear seats would usually live. There are buttons for a fire extinguisher and ESP deactivation, while a display to the right of the main instruments not only relays circuit information and lap times, but allows drivers to communicate with each other in conjunction with the on-board cameras.
