  • First decade of BMW’s MINI is out of this world

Approximately 300,000 MINIs have been sold in the UK since its launch ten years ago, meaning around 15 billion miles have been covered – or put another way – 600,000 times around the globe.

Of course, these numbers are an estimate. But MINI is looking for more realistic figure, so has launched ‘MINI Lunatics’, a special space-themed site where owners can log their car’s mileage. Various prizes are on offer to those who happen to dock in a section where the surprises are hidden, and an extra incentive for anyone finding specific hidden words in the site – a trip for four to Cape Canaveral.

Drivers who have driven at least 252,000 miles – the equivalent distance to the moon – could be in line to scoop special limited edition MINI memorabilia.

For the record, our 2005 Cooper has devoured over 112,000 miles – and one clutch…

  • Audi Q3 by ABT Sportsline

Kempten-based VAG specialists ABT Sportsline has released images and details of its program for the Audi Q3 SUV.

Thanks to some reworking of the Q3’s management system, there are tuning options to suit the entire engine range. Depending on which 2.0 TSI model you have, ABT can upgrade it to either 250 hp (up from 210 hp) or 210 hp (up from 170 hp), while diesel owners with the 140 hp 2.0 TDI version can enjoy an extra 30 hp. The 177 HP jumps to 195 hp.

Cosmetically ABT offers a styling package for the Q3 which replaces the original, subtle grille with something that looks like Anthony Hopkins mask in Silence of the Lambs. There’s also an aggressive fascia, side sill extensions and a spoiler and apron for the rear. A choice of the company’s CR and DR alloy wheels in 18 to 20 inch diameter.

  • 2012 Opel Insignia gets new engines and equipment

Opel’s Insignia has already sold over 400,000 units since its début in 2008. It’s also enjoyed its fair share of accolades, picking up over 50 awards during its short lifetime.

The 2012 model receives new engines and extra equipment – starting with a 140 hp 1.4L turbo ecoFLEX powerplant. When combined with a six-speed manual gearbox, not only is it the most economical unit in the mid-size class segment, but it also has identical power to the outgoing previous 1.8L version.

The 2.0L turbo 4×4 model develops a healthy 250 hp – up 30 hp on the previous model and on the current FWD car – which is enough to propel it to 62 mph in just 7.5 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155 mph.

Apart from a start/stop function, the above models also feature other fuel saving technology including the addition of aerodynamic underbody panelling and the fitment of tyres with a low-rolling-resistance.

Inside, there’s the new Navi 600 and Navi 900 Europa infotainment device. All maps are stored on SD cards, and can be customised to suit the needs of the car’s owner/user, allowing them to add POIs (points of interest), which can be downloaded and stored on the system.

Elsewhere, “Indian Night” Nappa leather upholstery can be specified in black with Cognac piping. Externally. there’s new dark metallic lacquer “Luxor” paintwork, which has blue-violet color reflections – depending on the angle of light thrown on it. A range of new style alloy wheels will be available later in the year.
