New Mercedes SLK For Track Use

Mercedes are to produce a lighter, more powerful version of their SLK.
Although the SLK 55 AMG goes on sale in Germany next month, it was specifically developed for a wealthy customer to create a one make race series.
A modified front apron allows a steady flow of air to cool the transmission, while new hot air outlets behind the wheels help to keep the oil cooler temperatures to a minimum. Most of the weight loss, is due the folding hardtop being replaced with a carbon-fibre reinforced-plastic roof (which will also lower the cars centre of gravity).
The overall 45kg weight loss, coupled with the 400 bhp 5.5 litre V8, results in a 0-62 time of 4.5 seconds. AMG have fitted their composite brakes as well as height adjustable torsion suspension (including adjustable shock absorbers).
The ‘racer’ feel continues inside the car with a pair of AMG bucket seats and large areas swathed in carbon fibre. The only down side to this package, is the automatic transmission. Surely a manual gearbox would be a far more welcome addition to car designed for use on a circuit?
