  • Audi urban concept heading to Frankfurt

Audi has released a few renderings and details regarding its new urban concept car. Set out in a 1+1 configuration, Audi is touting it as an ultra-lightweight urban vehicle – featuring racing car characteristics.

It’s not hard to see where weight has been saved when, not only has carbon fibre been used in the car’s construction, but the undercarriage of the bodyshell is integrated within the two seats. Unusually, it appears that access is gained through the tailgate, while the roof can be slid right back allowing the driver to get to their seat.

Power for the baby concept comes in the form of two e-tron motors fed by a single lithium-ion battery.

We’ve added a couple of videos (that look a little too slick to be a ‘random’ spot…) showing the concept during a photoshoot in Berlin.

  • smart times 2011 draws 1,500 smart fans to Italy

After a decade of holding the event in Austria, 1,500 smart fans descended upon the seaside resort of Riccione in Italy at the weekend for this year’s smart times show. Lasting four days, smart times attracts owners, designers and tuners from all over the globe, with one group driving an incredible 2.286 km to be a part of it.

Participants were treated to a visit to Europe’s largest aquapark, as well as experiencing a few laps of the Misano World Circuit. There was also a trip to the Ferrari factory on offer, but the residents of Riccione weren’t seeing red over that particular weekend as – at one point – there were over 800 smart cars flowing through their streets.

The international smart community will be moving on to Belgium for the event in 2012.
