  • Two millionth MINI created

Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of its rebirth, BMW’s MINI is celebrating another achievement – the two millionth model rolling off the Oxford plant’s production line – a White Silver Convertible.

Launched in 2001, the hatchback was joined by a Convertible model in 2005 – also available in One, Cooper and Cooper S guise. The second generation arrived in 2007, which spawned the Clubman a year later, and Countryman model in 2010, while the quirky Mini Coupé was revealed last June. With a Roadster and Paceman version also in the pipeline, it’s safe to say that BMW has breathed new life into the much-loved brand. Impressively, the one millionth car was built by 2007, but it only took another four years to reach the two million mark. A scary statistic for the marque’s competitors.

With involvement in the WRC in the Countryman, and 24-hour racing in the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé Endurance machine, it’s impossible to predict where BMW will take its baby next. Ten years ago – if we’d told you that an electric-powered MINI would be racing around the legendary Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit – at 187 km/h, would you have believed us?

    Thought not.

  • Mercedes-Benz CL 63 AMG by Vaeth

Hösbach-based Mercedes-Benz tuner, Vaeth, has been working on the latest (C 216 ) CL 63 AMG Coupé. Thanks to reworking of the electronic engine management system via the company’s V63S Performance Kit; output from the 6.2L AMG unit is increased from 386 kW/525 hp and 630 Nm to 463 kW/630 hp and a colossal 930 Nm of torque. This results in a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 4.3 seconds and – as a result of the V-Max upgrade – a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph). However, Vaeth also adds a 360 km/h (223 mph) speedometer dial…

Visually, owners can specify mirror caps, a radiator cover and rear diffuser – all crafted from carbon fibre. The new three-piece alloy wheels are sized 9×20-inch at the front and 10.5×20-inch. • Audi reveals new S model range ahead of Frankfurt

Audi has released details and images of its 2013 S6, S7 Sportback and S8 models ahead of their world débuts in Frankfurt. Dropping the 5.2L V10 seen in previous models, the range is now powered by a newly-developed 4.0 TFSI unit. The S6 and S6 Avant use the 309 kW (420 hp) version of this engine – with a torque figure of 550 Nm (405.66 lb-ft) – good for a 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) time of 4.8 seconds (Avant in 4.9 s), while top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155.34 mph). Average fuel consumption is just 9.7L/100 km (24.25 US mpg) in the S6 and 9.8L/100 km (24.0 US mpg) in the Avant.

The S7 Sportback uses the same twin-turbo V8 as the S6 models, which propels the five-door coupé to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.9 seconds. Consumption is identical to the S6’s, which, not only has stop/start technology to thank, but also the new “cylinder on demand” management system, which works in a similar way to the ones found in Formula One cars: if the engine is only under light load – it simply shuts down four of its cylinders.
