  • Mercedes-Benz G-Class AMG by Vilner

Well known for providing luxury interiors for cars, boats and even small aircraft, Bulgarian-based styling specialist, Vilner, has reworked the interior of the rugged Mercedes-Benz G-Class AMG.

There’s added decadence in the cabin thanks to a total re-trim using nappa leather on the seats, dashboard, door panels and steering wheel in beige with contrasting black sections. The roof lining receives a covering of Alcantara in the same two colours, with quilted stitching used extensively.

Other additions include a fully trimmed and illuminated ‘Ground Zero’ sound system in the boot, LED daytime running lights and a set of new alloy wheels.

Vilner specialises in unique projects for its customers, including this one, and declined to reveal the price tag. However, we do know that its recent Land Rover Defender conversion cost €12,000 for the upholstery and € 4,600 for the sound system…

  • X-raid Team recruits ten experts for 2012 Rally Dakar

The X-raid Team is drawing on experience for the 2012 Dakar Rally by assembling a group of drivers with a winning mentality.

Spearheading the team is the legendary Stéphane Peterhansel. Now aged 46, Peterhansel enjoyed his first Dakar win – on a motorbike – back in 1991. Five more wins followed, before a switch to four wheels saw a further three victories – the last in 2007. Judging by his 2011 form: an Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge win and two seconds places at Russia’s Silk Way Rally and the Baja Poland, Peterhansel is obviously liking the MINI ALL4 Racing car, and this bodes well for January.

Apart from “Mister Dakar” it’s safe to say that the rest of the team is also up to speed, with drivers such as Leonid Novitskiy, Krzysztof Holowczyc, Nani Roma and Ricardo Leal dos Santos achieving ten top five finishes this season – including five wins and eight podiums.

The 8,000 kilometre event runs from from the Atlantic coast in Argentina and across South America to Chile, before the rally culminates in Peru. The five MINI ALL4 Racing cars, which develop 315 hp from their 3.0 L diesel engines, will be need to run like clockwork in order to cover the 800 kilometres per day that is asked of them. It’s no wonder around 50 percent of the Dakar entrants retire each year.

  • New Driving Excitement app for MINI Connected

The latest MINI Connected app has just been released, and includes a few new features thanks to its Driving Excitement mode.

As with the previous versions of the app, this update is uploaded to your Apple iPhone, which is then plugged into the car’s USB port and operated using the MINI joystick, steering wheel buttons and on-board monitor.

Once hooked up, the driver has access to information regarding the car’s condition, including engine temperature, fuel level, RPM and torque display, coolant temperature, status of the optional Sport Button and outside temperature – including signs of rain.

A nice touch is the Force Meter, which measures and records longitudinal and lateral acceleration over a specific timeframe before the on-board monitor provides an illuminated circular display of the driver’s responses.

  • G-Power BMW M5 previewed

Bayern-based BMW tuning specialist, G-Power, has released this photo of the new M5 in its workshop, along with a few hints of what’s to come.

    Already producing 412 kW (560 hp) from its 4.4 L twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the F10 version hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.4 seconds and can reach 305 km/h (190 mph) if equipped with the M Driver’s Package.

G-Power says it is already developing new wheels, aerodynamic upgrades and tuning programs resulting in at least 441 kW (600 hp) – for the first stage. Judging by those new tailpipes, lets presume there’s a full high performance system attached to them.

Who knows where the later stages could take the M5? For comparison, the company’s X6 M Typhoon churns out 533 kW (725 hp) from its 4.4 L V8.

G-Power’s parting shot was: “Fans can look forward to one of the most spectacular BMW M5s for 2012. And that is just the beginning….”
