Volkswagen Amarok Canyon concept
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has created the Amarok Canyon concept to transport freestyle kayakers and their equipment around in style.Finished in bright ‘Baladi Orange’ paintwork, the pick-up is fitted with a body lift kit and larger 18-inch ‘Durban’ five-spoke wheels wrapped in 275/65 R tyres, which results in the Canyon standing 85 mm taller than its standard counterpart, while their extra width meant a set of 35 mm extensions had to be attached to the arches. Other changes include electrically operated retracting tread plates, roof-mounted auxiliary headlights and smoked tail light lenses. Staying at the rear, a pair of carbon fibre kayaks are mounted to the cargo floor with the paddles latched in place on the inner surface of the tailgate.
Inside, the cabin features two-tone leather seats and a sports steering wheel and auxiliary instruments monitoring the Amarok’s climbing and tilt angles.
Powering this concept is a twin-turbocharged 2.0 TDI which delivers 132 kW (178 hp) and 400 Nm of torque to the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

Gumpert reveals Apollo R and Apollo Enraged
German supercar manufacturer Gumpert has revealed two extreme versions of its nutty mid-engined Apollo. The more hardcore Apollo R is a stripped-out track machine, created to satisfy demand, especially from the Asian market. “Many of our customers drive their Apollo on the racecourse, usually during track days or private events. With the Apollo R, we allow ambitious drivers among them to participate in open GT events,” confirmed boss Roland Gumpert. Powered by a heavily-tuned 4.2-litre Audi V8 engine, Gumpert adds a full race exhaust system, increases supercharging pressure and makes adjustments to the ignition, while the air intakes are optimized for maximum air flow, resulting in 641 kW (860 hp).
Cooling has been upgraded for the engine and transmission, which is a spur-toothed dog ring system with steering wheel-mounted flappy paddles changing the cogs without the need for a clutch pedal. Weight is slashed to 1,100 kg thanks to the use of lightweight milled components including a titanium blade stabiliser on the rear axle, a minimized wiring loom and even the removal of the boot. But it does appear to have a coating of Alcantara on the dashboard…
The road legal Apollo Enraged is slightly softer, weighing in at 1,175 kg and having to make do with a mere 582 kW (780 hp). When it comes to creature comforts Gumpert lists a digital LCD instrument panel as its main feature. The ten-speaker multimedia system and fridge are probably on the options list.
