  • BMW find of the day: unique M3 Sport Evolution Convertible

    BMW M3 Sport Evolution Convertible
While browsing car sales website Mobile we stumbled across this rarity; the only official M3 Sport Evolution Convertible in existence.

Owned by a fanatic in Hamburg, this metallic blue 1991 model comes with full leather and has only covered 52,000 miles, but it’s what’s under the hood that marks it out as unique. Whereas 600 examples of the more powerful Sport Evolution variant were built in Coupe form, this Convertible variant was created for a customer by BMW Motorsport GmbH. Thanks to an increased engine displacement of 2.5-litres, the four-cylinder produced 235 hp (175 kW). Sitting 10 mm lower than the regular M3, it also gains additional air intakes, a lighter boot lid and rear spoiler.

We’d really love to have this sitting in our garage, but finding the €249,000 may prove to be a slight stumbling block.

  • Ben Collins goes egging in new Audi RS 6 Avant commercial

    Ben Collins
Audi UK has released a new promotional video featuring Top Gear’s former Stig, Ben Collins, as he tackles world renowned freerunner Damien Walters in an egg-throwing battle armed with an RS 6 Avant.

The family-friendly supercar uses a twin-turbocharged 4.0 TFSI V8 that sends 412 kW (560 hp) and 700 Nm of torque to all four wheels via an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. On the road, that equates to a 0-100 km/h time of 3.9 seconds and a limited 250 km/h top speed, which can be raised to 280 km/h (174 mph) upon request.

  • Mercedes driver hits the road – with his bonnet up

    Mercedes driver
This man was recently seen driving along a stretch of road with a 50 mph speed limit – with his bonnet up.

BBC presenter Jon Cuthill was the passenger in a car on the A35 near Cadnam in Hampshire when he spotted the Mercedes-Benz E-Class going rolling along with the rest of the traffic. But as they went to overtake it, it soon became clear that the buffoonery was intentional as there was a battery charger perched on top of the engine.

“Why would anyone think driving along a public highway with your bonnet up was a good idea? The bonnet obviously hadn’t just sprung open accidentally. I just think it’s crazy that someone would drive along a dual carriageway stretch of road without being able to see through the windscreen,” said Mr Cuthill.

  • Porsche 918 Spyder drive concept explained

    Porsche 918 Spyder
Porsche has just released this video explaining how its 918 Spyder‘s intelligent management system controls the car’s five driving modes – from comfortable to race-ready.

At the heart of this innovative hypercar is a 453 kW (608 hp) 4.6-litre V8 engine, which is based on that of the LMP2 RS Spyder race car and is backed up by a hybrid module at the rear along with a electric motor powering the front wheels. When using electric power alone, top speed is 150 km/h (93 mph) with a range of 25 kilometres achievable – depending on driving style but, with the full 661 kW (887 hp) a its disposal, 100 km/h appears in 2.8 seconds and 200 km/h in 7.9s, while top speed is 340 km/h (211 mph).

Apart from the electric-only E-Power mode, the driver can also choose from Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Race Hybrid and Hot Lap modes. Hybrid uses the best combination of power sources to achieve optimum efficiency; Sport Hybrid sees the combustion engine in permanent use and Race Hybrid features sharpened PDK responses and bursts of electric power, while still intermittentl charging the battery. Finally, Hot Lap is the perfect selection for qualifying, taking maximum energy from the battery – but only for a handful of laps.
