  • Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive breaks Nurburgring record

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive
Mercedes-Benz has broken the Nurburgring’s lap record for a electric production car with its SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive, dipping below the 8-minute barrier in the process.

Recording an impressive time of 7:56.234 minutes with Markus Hofbauer behind the wheel, the Gullwing takes the crown from Audi’s R8 e-tron, which took 8:09.099 minutes to negotiate the Green Hell exactly a year ago. Putting the achievement into perspective, Walter Röhrl recorded a 7:56 in a Porsche Panamera Turbo.

Producing a colossal 552 kW (740 hp) and a maximum torque figure of 1,000 Nm from a quartet of electric motors, the electric-power gullwing is capable of cracking 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds.

“Mercedes-AMG impressively shows the potential of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive with this new record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. This record run is further proof for our constant innovative vigour,” said the Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, Ola Källenius.

  • Volkswagen Passat CC by Folien Center

Volkswagen Passat CC by Folien Center
Following on from its Audi TT RS project, Folien Center has released details of a recently completed Volkswagen Passat CC R-Line owned by one of its regular customers.

Externally, the company has applied a matte Marrakech Brown foil to the bodyshell with raised R logo on the C-pillar, while the radiator grille, mirror casings and roof have been painted in high-gloss black. The multi-piece Bentley Mulliner wheels, which measure 9 x 20-inches, feature matte black centres and wear 225/30 Nankang NS-II tyres, while the ride height is reduced thanks to an adjustable KW coilover set-up.

Moving inside, FC has left the R-Line-equipped cabin relatively untouched apart from wrapping the aluminium sections on the dashboard, centre console and door panels in body-coloured foil.

The performance upgrade was handled by SKN, who fitted their Stage One software upgrade to the 2.0 litre TDI engine, which saw output from the dainty oil burner climb from 127 kW (170 hp) and 350 Nm of torque to 157 kW (210 hp) and 400 Nm.

  • BMW’s E28 M5 gets the Petrolicious treatment

    BMW E28 M5
This new video from Petrolicious looks at Randy Balingit-Hartmann and his much-travelled E28 BMW M5.

Purchased in 1989, it was one of the first M5s to arrive in San Diego and Randy has owned it since day one covering an astonishing 400,000 miles with no mechanical issues.

North American cars used the 191 kW (256 hp) S38B35 3.5-litre six-cylinder engine equipped with a catalytic converter, which allowed a sub-7 second sprint to 100 km/h and 238 km/h (148 mph) top speed.

This particular E28 has had some upgrades carried out to such areas as the engine, suspension and wheels, but Randy says he has plans to return it to a more stock configuration now that he’s getting a little older.

He’d also like to be buried in it…
