Volkswagen to cease WRC involvement after 2016

Sadly, after dominating the sport for four successive years, Volkswagen has announced that it is withdrawing from the WRC Championship at the end of 2016.

Following a tough, diesel-related year, the company appears to be turning its attentions towards the development of electric vehicles, although 200 workers involved in the development of VW’s all-conquering Polo R WRCs will remain at its Hannover premises in order to support customers running Golf GTI TCR racecars.

“With the upcoming expansion in electrification of our vehicle range we must focus all our efforts on important future technologies. We far exceeded our sporting goals in the WRC, now we are realigning Volkswagen Motorsport and moving the vehicle technology of the future more starkly into focus,” said Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Technical Development.

Such a shame we’ll never see the 2017 car compete…
