  • It’s official: 2013 Audi RS 4 Avant

After a zillion renderings, Audi has officially unveiled its new RS 4 Avant model.

Propelled by the company’s trusty 4.2 FSI engine, which transfers its power to all four wheels via a flappy paddle-operated seven-speed S tronic gearbox, the Avant has 331 kW (450 hp) and 430 Nm (317 lb/ft) at its disposal, meaning this family-friendly supercar can crack 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 4.7 seconds before hitting a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), although Audi can raise this figure to 280 km/h (174 mph) if you ask them nicely enough. The car’s Launch Control, which optimizes clutch engagement, minimizes wheel slip, providing explosive acceleration off the line.

Weight is reduced thanks to the use of aluminium in the five-link front suspension and self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension, while hiding behind the 19-inch (or 20-inch as an option) ten-spoke alloy wheels lurks eight piston front calipers and vented 365 mm discs, or optional carbon fibre ceramic discs gripped by six-piston calipers.

Visually the RS 4’s face is dominated by that hexagonal single-frame grille, wedge-shaped headlights with LED daytime running lights and relatively-restrained air intakes, while the previously-seen flared arches have made way for boxier items reminiscent of the RS 6 and iconic ur-quattro. LED lights also feature at the rear, along with two oval tailpipes and an upturned diffuser integrated within the bumper.

Inside, the cabin is based around Black or Moon Silver Nappa leather sports seating, which can be swapped for bucket seats or more decadent, ventilated deluxe seats. Switchgear is a mixture of chrome and aluminium, while the inlays are carbon fibre or brushed aluminium, piano black or stainless steel mesh as an option.

The RS 4 Avant will be hitting showrooms by Autumn 2012 starting at a price of € 76,600 in Germany.
