STUTTGART – July 24, 2008: Daimler AG has converted the first vehicles of its existing fuel cell fleet from 350 to 700-bar technology. With this more highly compressed hydrogen, the operating range of these vehicles can now be extended by up to 70 percent.

The second home Grand Prix victory in a fortnight and the second consecutive race win for Lewis Hamilton and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. Lewis’s supreme win in the Santander German Grand Prix was the team’s first at Hockenheim in a decade, marking 10 years since Mika Häkkinen won in a McLaren-Mercedes MP4-13 in 1998.

McLaren Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton will be starting tomorrow’s German grand prix from pole after edging out the Ferrari of Felipe Massa out by two tenths of a second. “My final lap I was quite happy with, it went very smoothly,” said Hamilton. “I knew I had it in me and I knew we had the pace. It was quite windy but it did not cause me any problems. It’s been a good day and I feel very chilled.” Full qualifying results below.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in both Friday’s Free Practice sessions for the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim. In the afternoon, Lewis completed 37 laps and posted a time of 1m15.025 which was the fastest time of the day. Heikki Kovalainen drove 37 laps and was fourth with a 1m15.990. In the morning session, Lewis was fastest with a 1m15.537 (22 laps) ahead of Heikki with a 1:15.666 (19 laps).

Like the coupe version, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster once again unites the legend of the successful SLR racing models from the 1950s with the innovative technology of modern Formula 1 vehicles from the Vodafone-McLaren-Mercedes team.
“It is unique. Nothing else combines genuine blitzkrieg power with such everyday normality. Seriously. As you are carried by the Devil’s Wind, you have the leather seats, the sat nav and all the usual Mercedes bits and pieces. My only real gripe in this department is the roof, which is only partly electric. “That’s to save weight,” said the man from McLaren. Yeah, right.”
