The Sunday Times’ Andrew Frankel has been testing BMW’s oil-burning 330d. The car, equipped with a 245bhp six cylinder, is capable of hitting 62mph in 6.1 seconds before going on to a 155mph top speed, yet uses less fuel and emits lower levels of CO2 than a 1.4 litre Fiat.

bmw 3 series

“The threat from the C-class is not to be underestimated, but the Mercedes is nowhere near as good to drive as the 3-series, while the new Audi A4 has turned out to be a sizable disappointment. The 330d is thrillingly quick when required to be, and admirably nimble too, but also refined and easy to live with the rest of the time. ”
