Rüsselsheim. The new Opel Astra is now available at Opel dealerships in Germany, Spain and Benelux. Prices for the compact five-door model start at 15,900 euros in Germany for the entry-level gasoline engine 1.4 (64 kW/87 hp). Opel already has received more than 45,000 orders for the newest Opel model.
Even before the car has gone on sale, the compact class car won the Golden Steering Wheel award from the European Auto Bild magazines and finished on the podium in the 2010 European Car of the Year competition. The consumer protection organization Euro NCAP confirmed the new Astra’s optimal vehicle safety last week by awarding it the maximum five stars. Euro NCAP also gave the Astra the highest score ever for whiplash protection thanks to its active head restraints.
Unanimously praised for its dynamic qualities and the efficiency of its innovative rear suspension using a compound crank rear axle with a Watt’s link, the new Astra also brings many comfort and safety features to the compact class from the upper segment. Most were introduced by the Insignia to the midsize class and are now available for the first time in the compact segment. Some of these items are standard in specific versions or are part of very competitive option packs. These include the new mechatronic FlexRide chassis (930 Euros in Germany), the advanced Adaptive Forward Lighting AFL+ (1,100 euros), the Opel Eye front camera system (525 Euros) with traffic sign recognition and lane departure warning, ergonomic sport seats that carry the coveted AGR seal of approval (Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V. – Action for Healthy Backs; 500 euros) as well as the integrated rear bicycle carrier FlexFix (590 Euros).
In Germany, the Astra comes with a choice of nine engines, five gasoline and four diesel models, ranging 64 kW/87 hp to 132 kW/180 hp. This includes the 95 hp Astra 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX which boasts an average fuel consumption of only 4.2 liters per 100 kilometers and just 109 g/km CO2 emissions.
