The Sunday Times’ Andrew Frankel has been driving BMW’s forthcoming X1 xDrive 23d SE model. Set to make its world debut this September; Frankel was forbidden from taking any interior shots of the X1, but doesn’t understand why, as it appears to be using little more than dials and switchgear from its 3-Series brother, along with a virtually identical dash, too. Performance from the 204bhp diesel unit sounds promising with 62mph arriving in 7.3sec before hitting a top speed of 140mph.

“The chief point to note here is that the X1 is by no stretch a family car. There’s good space in the front, and the boot is a decent size and shape, but the legroom in the back is tight enough to start anyone other than small children fidgeting soon after climbing aboard.”
