According to witnesses, A pair of racing supercars were achieving speeds of up to 130 mph - even through 50mph roadworks zones on the M27. The Bugatti Veyron driver was eventually caught, but the owner of Ferrari 599 GTB managed to disappear off into the distance. A lack of rear license plate helped the driver to escape a conviction.
The French driver of the Bugatti was extremely fortunate to have been clocked at just 97mph, meaning he received a paltry three penalty points and £60 fine. Supercar fanatic Eddie David, who was travelling in his Audi, reckoned the race was like something from Le Mans, saying: “The cars came flying past us. Then the police car came hurtling past at about 140mph.”
Eddie’s wife Mel took the photos. She said: “We were in hysterics when we saw the Bugatti had been stopped. The policeman had a furious look that suggested the driver was in tons of trouble.”
