The Nikkei financial daily has reported that Volkswagen is set to jointly produce lithium-ion batteries with Japanese giant Sanyo Electric Co.

The article states that Volkswagen will import the battery to use it in their hybrid and electric car, due out in 2012. Sanyo already makes nickel-hydrogen batteries that can be recharged repeatedly and these will be used by Volkswagen and Audi AG in the group’s first hybrid model to be rolled out as soon as next year.

However, the lithium-ion batteries will be jointly developed and would be lighter and more compact than nickel-hydrogen batteries, helping to slash the car’s weight by as much as 200-300 kilograms (440-660 pounds) while also allowing the car to have better fuel efficiency and acceleration.
