If you missed last night’s Top Gear then you won’t have seen the three powerhouse models from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Watch for Clarkson trying to hit the apple!
There’s a pretty good chance that you won’t be unwrapping one of these tomorrow morning, but at least you can dream. Serious Wheels has just posted a selection of SLR 722 GT wallpapers for your desktop pleasure.
Pube-haired Yorkshireman Jeremy Clarkson has had his hands on the Cooper S version of MINI’s Clubman model. It only gets two stars from a possible five. Oh dear.
“Looking for good things in a car that torque-steers like a wayward horse and has no boot, no rear visibility, a silly door and a ridiculous cruising speed is a bit like looking for good things in a piece of fish that’s dry, tasteless and bony. There’s no point.”
Unless you frequent VW shows, there’s a pretty good chance that you won’t have seen a Golf Country in the flesh. Designed for light off-road driving, it had more suspension travel, four-wheel drive, bullbars, and a skidplate for protecting the engine area. In Europe it was offered with the acclaimed 114bhp (85 kW) 1.8 8v petrol engine, and in smaller numbers, the 75bhp (56 kW) 1.6 GTD turbo diesel engine.
Here, we see one of our favourite drivers in action. The brilliant Sabine Schmitz pits 9ff’s crazy-quick turbocharged 997 Cabriolet against an AC Cobra. Let battle commence!
The latest evolution of Volkswagen’s pioneering DSG twin-clutch gearbox, now featuring seven gears, greater efficiency and a more compact design is set to make its debut in the new year.
The new transversely mounted seven-speed DSG gearbox is revolutionary. It distances itself from the existing six-speed DSG gearbox, which uses a pair of clutches immersed in oil, by adopting a pair of dry clutches. This not only saves considerable weight and improves the efficiency of the system but also makes the new gearbox more compact.
Incorporating around 650 newly developed parts, the SLK models of 2008 are even more dynamic and now offer an even more emotionally charged driving experience. Key visual enhancements include new-look front and rear sections as well as a meticulously modified interior with a new instrument cluster and three-spoke sports steering wheel.
For all off-road enthusiasts the famous Mercedes-Benz tuner Carlsson is offering a complete tuning package, which clearly, if tastefully, underlines the modern features of the M-Class. Big, voluminous yet still sporty, with its performance tweaked to 269 bhp and a potent torque, and combining this with a touch of luxury, the CD 32 based on the ML 320 CDI always cuts a fine figure both in the countryside and in the metropolitan jungle.
Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark – the main character in the film version of “Iron Man†from Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios. His superpowers are the result of the highly versatile and indestructible high-tech armor that he developed himself. When he is without his suit, the technically-adept billionaire relies on the Audi R8.
“The R8 is the perfect car for Tony Stark,†Iron Man director Jon Favreau said. “It’s a technological masterpiece. Plus it’s fast, safe, and sure to be noticed.†The leading lady, Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia “Pepper†Potts), drives an Audi S5 in the film.

While Mercedes’ ultra-exclusive SLR McLaren 722 GT track car has been making rounds in the motoring press for several weeks now, a few key questions remained unanswered - including “How much?” and “Where can I get one?” We can answer the “How much?” question rather easily (about 1.2 million USD), it’s the “Where can I get one?” question that’s more interesting.
Well, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT will be made available to the North American market exclusively through RENNtech, the Florida-based MB tuning house owned and operated by super-tuner Hartmut Feyhl, who also lists “technical director, AMG North America” on his resume. “It’s been a very exciting project to be involved in,” explains Feyhl.
If (like us) you have a spare alloy wheel, or two, kicking around your house but can’t bring yourself to throw it away, this could be the solution. The liquid cooled SLI-Machine Wheel PC is encased within an 18-inch Porsche Cayenne rim, then wrapped up in a Bridgestone tyre to round things out.
MINI Clubman has been on sale for less than a month and is a proving a huge hit with the British public, contributing to a record November total of 4,104 new MINI registrations. In many UK dealerships MINI Clubman allocations were quickly snapped up, leaving the car sold out into 2008. Bumper sales meant MINI enjoyed its largest ever share of the UK market last month, at 2.59 per cent. November was the third record sales month for MINI in 2007.
According to German business publication Capital, talks between U.S. computer giants Apple and Volkswagen developing an “i-Car” are stalling. Apparently, Apple is discussing ideas with several car makers on producing a car loaded with Apple goodies.
Earlier this year, Volkswagen’s chief executive officer Martin Winterkorn had discussed plans to incorporate more extensive computers into a compact car with his Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
A VW spokesman said at the time that the talks were at an early stage and that “several ideas were still being mooted.”
