Inside Line has been grilling BMW M Vice President Gerhard Richter. They threw in a couple of questions regarding a CSL version of the forthcoming E90 M3 model. Here’s his response.

When quizzed about a possible CSL version, he replied: “We built the last M3 CSL to test how many euros customers are willing to pay for less weight. For 20 years, they’ve learnt to pay for more power, not less weight. The reaction to the CSL was very positive and you will already see in the new M3 that we’ve spent a lot of money bringing down the weight.”
When asked directly, whether there would always be a CSL model in the M3 range, he said:Yes, yes, yes. We are thinking about such a special version. Yes, of course. Because the last M3 CSL version was so successful and it’s fun to drive. Maybe.
