Here’s the official renderings of Seat’s forthcoming Mondeo fighter. This is the first time that the Volkswagen-owned company has built a D-segment car, and the Passat-platformed saloon could be in dealerships by as early as 2009.

Speaking about the company’s decision to expand the brand, Seat president Erich Schmitt said ‘We enlarge our current product range, which not only gives our clients the possibility to grow with the brand, but also enables us to increase the profitability of our dealer network.’

A couple of camouflaged MINIs have been spotted outside a Starbucks in LA. One of the questionable pair appears to have the vented Cooper S bonnet and 17 inch s-lites, and the other, a single ‘regular’ Cooper tailpipe and 16 inch rims.

There have been rumours of a super-hot MINI in the pipeline, and perhaps the tape is covering extra ducts? To be honest, no one seems to know what’s going on with this gimp-masked pair. If you do, let us in on the secret!

Volkswagen will enter two vehicles with the driver/co-driver pairings of Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/RSA) and Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (RSA/D) in the legendary Baja 500.

The offroad race will be staged at Ensenada on the Mexican peninsula of Baja California on 2 June on a 500-mile loop, equating to roughly 800 kilometres. The Baja 500 is seen as the “little sister†of the Baja 1000, which is closely connected with the origin of the first generation of buggies based on Volkswagen technology.

We like this new advertising campaign from Audi, showing the A6 Allroad quattro’s versatility. We doubt that anyone will ever take one off-road, but we’re big fans of this meaty Audi.

The text reads “Just do a turn to discover its double nature. The new Audi A6 allroad.â€

Volkswagen has developed an evolution of its pioneering DSG gearbox.
The new seven-speed system – a world first and codenamed DQ200 – uses a pair of dry clutches in preference to the six-speed version’s twin wet clutches. This increases efficiency and performance over the wet clutch six-speed system.

The six-speed DSG gearbox, which was introduced in 2003, uses a pair of clutches submerged in oil. The new seven-speed gearbox adopts a pair of dry, organic bonded friction linings that do not require cooling, making the drivetrain more efficient through the extra ratio and the fact that less power is required for the gear selection and clutch servo system.

Volkswagen is to introduce a new turbocharged 1.4-litre engine to replace its existing 1.6-litre FSI engine.

Based on the 1.4-litre TSI engine the new unit is not fitted with a supercharger and instead uses a sophisticated turbocharger. The result is an output of 122bhp linked to a choice of manual or DSG gearboxes.
The new engine is planned to be fitted to the Golf, Golf Plus, Golf Estate, Jetta and Passat models, replacing the current 1.6-litre FSI engine when production commences later this year.
