A new factory in India could be used to help boost the production of BMW’s super-successful MINI. The plant; situated 40km south of Chennai, is seen as a realistic choice to help BMW cope with spiralling demands.
“We are carrying out a market analysis for the launch of the Mini in India. If it is found to be viable, we could have it on sale here in 2009,†said BMW India president Peter Kronschnabl.

David Panton; BMW’s Asia region senior vice president, explained that big tax differences – 114% on imported cars, compared with 60% on Indian-built models – would have a bearing on the company’s decision. “We started the analysis a month ago and we are keeping our options open to include both the completely built up (CBU) route and assembly from parts that are supplied from abroad (completely knocked down – CKD).
“Going the CKD route would call for a big investment, but of course, we have to take price positioning in the reckoning. It is too early to say what will happen…at this stage we don’t know what sales volume would be necessary to make it viable,†said Panton.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. was presented with the PACE Collaborator Award on Monday evening, April 16, 2007 at the 13th Annual Automotive News PACE Awards for its EcoConcept paint process partnership with DuPont Automotive Systems. This breakthrough technology was recognized for reducing the number of paint processing steps, cost and time efficiency, as well as being more environmentally friendly.
Volkswagen began seeking new cost-efficient and more environmentally friendly painting and finishing methods in 1998. DuPont responded to the challenge with an innovative basecoat and paint process named EcoConcept. EcoConcept eliminates the need for a separate primer application by including all the primer functions in the basecoat.
Volkswagen and DuPont collaborated to perfect the EcoConcept process and tested the technology in Wolfsburg in 2003, coating approximately 800 vehicles. Working together, the new processes launched in 2005 at Volkswagen’s plant in Puebla, Mexico and soon after in Volkswagen’s Pamplona, Spain paint facility.

The Volkswagen Group delivered more vehicles to customers during the first three months of 2007 than in any previous quarter.

The Group sold 1.47 million vehicles worldwide, corresponding to a 7.9 percent rise compared with the same period in the previous year. “We were more than able to compensate for the expected drop in sales in Germany as a result of increased VAT by rises, some of them quite considerable, in other key world markets. An important success factor is the very pleasing growth on the Chinese market,†Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, commented. “All brands contributed to these excellent results, confirming that the Group is in a good position to master forthcoming challenges and that we will meet our sales targets for this year in spite of difficult market conditions.â€
