Euro NCAP and MINI have revealed the second generation MINI has achieved a 5 Star Euro NCAP crash test rating for occupant protection. In addition, the MINI scored a reasonable 3 stars for child occupant protection, and 2 stars for pedestrian impact.

Hybrid Technologies Selects Warner Music Group To Bring Electric Lithium Vehicles To The Music Community

Nevada-based Hybrid Technologies has created this environmentally-friendly all-lithium MINI Cooper. The car has a 120-mile range, and is capable of hitting 80mph. The price tag is an eye-watering £30,000.

More Audi R8 V10 Photos

Car Magazine has published some more photos of Audi’s (flammable) R8 V10.

The V10 unit is believed to produce around 80bhp more than its V8 sister, taking power to around 500bhp - enough to take the R8 close to the holy grail of 200mph. The main difference in the appearance of the V10 car is believed to be its swollen side-blades, allowing more air to feed the meaty engine.

The V10-powered R8 is expected to swing into production in around 18 months time.

Audi RS4 Avant vs Chrysler 300C SRT

Autobild has published a good article comparing the Audi RS4 Avant with Chrysler’s tank - the 300C SRT8.

Both estates get their power from a V8 unit, but even though the Chrysler’s engine is much larger - 6.1L compared to the Audi’s 4.2L, the RS4 isn’t shamed in the power stakes, producing an impressive 420bhp (just 10bhp less than the 300C SRT.)

The Audi takes the glory in the acceleration tests, hitting 100km/h (62mph) in 4.8 seconds, with the Chrysler taking 5.2 seconds. The Inglostadt beauty also wins the crown on the quarter mile (Audi - 13.05 s, Chrysler - 13.32 s.)

The American reels the slinky German in on the Autobahn, managing a top speed of 265km/h (165mph) , compared to the RS4’s (restricted) 250km/h (155mph.)

More Junior Phantom Details

Rolls-Royce boss Ian Robertson has revealed more details of the company’s baby Phantom.

During an interview at last weeks Shanghai motor show, Robertson stated that “The design is finished, and the first prototypes should be running very shortly.”

“It will cost roughly two thirds as much as a Phantom, or somewhere between £150,000 and £175,000.” He added “we’ll aim to produce around 800 of them a year. That should more than double our overall sales.”

The baby Roller is expected to share parts with the next generation BMW 7-Series and CS Concept, but Robertson insisted that the car “will be unmistakably a Rolls-Royce.”

The new model is expected to hit the motor shows in in 2009 before going on sale in early 2010.

Volkswagen Named One Of Women’s Wear Daily’s Top 12 Most-Respected Generation Y Brands

Volkswagen of America, Inc. is pleased to announce that it is considered among the “Top 12 Most-Respected Generation Y brands” according to a recent study by Outlaw Consulting, a San Francisco-based research firm that follows the habits of 21- to 27-year-olds.

The list is published in the April 19 issue of Women’s Wear Daily. The list, reports that Generation Y knows about being fashionable yet economical, considers itself interesting yet simple and views Volkswagen as a top trendsetting brand.

In a generation of consumers that prides themselves on the Goonies, Nintendo and Cabbage Patch Kids, this age group, according to WWD, also represents “young, environmentally conscious consumers.” Driving cars from the Jetta to the Passat, Gen-Yers relate to Volkswagen’s green initiatives and its “Fun to Drive” motto, yet value the affordability and approachability of the brand the most. Gen-Yer’s respect a brand that is “clean and simple” yet “continues to keep things fun,” said strategic analyst Holly Brickley from Outlaw Consulting, the creative research firm who compiled the results.

Adding to its reputation as a Generation Y brand, Volkswagen has initiated several lifestyle endeavors in order to align the brand with Gen-Yers. VW developed exclusive style accessories for its new Eos convertible, designed by top fashion and home accessory designers including Lutz and Patmos and Hable Construction. Playing along with Gen-Yer’s passion for music, VW partnered with First Act guitars to create the GarageMaster electric guitar, which brought rock and roll to the hands of the consumer by allowing them to plug directly into select VW vehicles and have a concert wherever they pleased. These irreverent initiatives attest to the “authenticity of Volkswagen” - something, according to Outlaw, is well respected by Generation Y.

“These are the top brands whose values align with those of the generation - in their core philosophy, they really get what youth is about, and therefore are viewed by Gen-Yers as authentic and real, in terms of who they are and what they’re trying to achieve,” said Barbara Bylenga, Outlaw’s president.

BusinessWeek defines Generation Y as “One of the most watched age groups because it’s among the largest - almost three times the size of Generation X.” And, in a generation with cell phones, music downloads and Instant Messaging on the Internet, it’s “refreshing to have a company that is authentically cool, more so than trying too hard to be hip and edgy,” according to Outlaw.
