Volkswagen Warn Of E-Mail Scam

VW has told people to disregard an e-mail circulating in the UAE claiming the recipient has won a car and large cash prize.

The fake e-mails (claiming to be from “The Lottery Department, Volkswagen Automobiles”) tell the recipient that they have been selected from over than 250,000 people, to receive a £2 million handout along with a new Volkswagen car.

The e-mail contains a “UK” telephone number that people are asked to call in order to give a “claims officer” a “secret pin code”.

In a statement, Volkswagen UK said the e-mails “have no connection” with their company, adding that “Extensive enquiries have revealed this is an online scam originating from Nigeria.”

Investigations show that the telephone number is actually a Nigerian premium-rate number, and anyone calling it will end up with a heavy telephone bill, with the scam artists taking a large share of the money received.
