BMW: First With Regenerative Braking Petrol Model

BMW’s new 5-Series saloon will be the first non-hybrid model to come equipped with a regenerative braking system.

5 series

The system (named Brake Energy Regeneration by BMW) works by harnessing energy lost through braking. Thanks to an intelligent alternator, that energy is used to re-charge the car’s battery, thus lowering emissions and improving fuel efficiency by around three percent.

Another feature on the car, will be a high-capacity glass mat battery, which enables rapid re-charging during braking.

Customers can expect other models in the range to receive new technology, including low resistance tyres, and a start-stop system that switches the engine off when the car is sat idle, in traffic (similar to the Mk3 VW Golf “Ecomatic” from the 1990’s.)
