Plant spokesperson Evelyne Helin said: ‘The aim is to gradually restart the factory so that work can resume there next week, hopefully on Monday.’

With the factory losing more than half of its 5400 employees, annual production is expected to drop from 200,000 to 84,000 vehicles. The Golf will be produced until 2008, with Audi’s A1 replacing it, on the production line in 2009.
