Autobahns Could Face Limits

In an effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions, environmentalists in Germany are pushing for the introduction of speed limits on their unrestricted autobahns.

President of the German Federal Environment Agency, Andreas Troge, commented “In the past few years, the reduction of greenhouse gases has stalled even in our country.” He added “A limit of 120 kph (75 mph) would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 30 percent.”
Germany’s transport minister Wolfgang Tiefensee doesn’t agree, saying “I am committed to a reduction in emissions but a general speed limit on open stretches of road does not make sense.”
