BMW To Drop SMG In Favour Of DSG

BMW has approached Borg Warner regarding their new twin-clutch transmissions. It seems the Bavarian giants are looking to phase out the much-maligned SMG transmissions currently in production.

While the SMG design may be a thing of beauty, its real life performance simply wasn’t up to par with the rest of the vehicle, leading it to dilute rather than enhance the overall driving experience.

The Borg Warner twin-clutch systems are currently used by VW and Audi and marketed as the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). Porsche has also indicated they will be an option on some of their future models.
